About ESLAV/ECLAM
The European Society of Laboratory Animal Veterinarians (ESLAV) promotes expertise in
laboratory animal science. It organizes annual meetings, publishes Briefing twice a year, and
advances veterinary knowledge on breeding, health, welfare, and use of animals. ESLAV offers a
platform for veterinarians to discuss key issues and promotes continuous learning about evolving
laws and regulations. It also supports training for those entering the field.
ESLAV represents the veterinary profession in European decision-making bodies, advocating for
veterinary oversight in animal care and ensuring veterinarians are involved in ethics committees and
facility management. The society collaborates with organizations like LAVA to strengthen ties
between veterinary professionals in Europe and the UK and supports the ECLAM, which structures
The European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ECLAM) aims to advance scientific
progress and improve the competency of professionals. Its key goals include establishing post-
graduate standards for education, training, and experience, and setting requirements for veterinary
specialists via examinations. ECLAM offers two main certification pathways: a standard residency
program and an alternative route for those unable to follow the traditional training. Veterinarians
with significant expertise may qualify for examination if approved.
ECLAM ensures that training and experience requirements align with qualification assessments and
regularly reviews its standards. It also supports ongoing learning through continuing education
programs and organizes an annual scientific meeting for veterinarians.
